How AI is Revolutionising Healthcare in Singapore

Diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia (DHL) are becoming increasingly prevalent, driving up healthcare costs worldwide. Approximately half of individuals with DHL may develop serious complications such as stroke, cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, and foot problems. With aging populations in many countries, including Singapore, this issue is expected to worsen. To address this growing concern, AI Singapore has launched a grand Health Challenge. The National University of Singapore and SingHealth have taken up this challenge by developing an innovative AI tool called Jarvis DHL. This cutting-edge solution aims to empower patients to take ownership of their healthcare journeys through AI technologies.

The Jarvis DHL Project: Four Key Themes

The Jarvis project, in collaboration with SingHealth, focuses on four main themes to tackle the Grand Challenge set by AI Singapore:

1. Jarvis Decision Support for Primary Care

The team has developed PredictAI, a tool trained on SingHealth polyclinics database. It provides:

  • Patient similarity analysis
  • Medication recommendations
  • Personalized care plans

This AI-enabled solution aims to enhance patients’ awareness of their risks and improve medication adherence. By presenting data from 100 similar patient profiles, the tool helps patients internalize potential outcomes and adopt healthier behaviors.

2. Jarvis Decision Support for Advanced Care

For specialist outpatient clinics, the team has created an AI model to predict the 5-year risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in high-risk DHL patients. The Jarvis MACE tool:

  • Uses over 60 parameters reflecting various aspects of patient health
  • Employs longitudinal data for enhanced risk predictions
  • Considers patient health aspects from preceding years

3. Jarvis Early Screening

This theme utilizes AI and analytics on retina images and heart scans for patient risk stratification. The developed algorithms:

  • Analyze retinal images to determine cardiovascular system damage
  • Identify high-risk patients for further optimization of cardiovascular risk factors
  • Aim to prevent heart attacks and strokes

4. Jarvis Behavioral Nudging

A mobile app leveraging AI algorithms empowers patients to take control of their health by:

  • Motivating lifestyle improvements and better health choices
  • Analyzing wearable data from devices like Fitbit and Apple Watch
  • Delivering personalized nudges to promote and sustain behavior changes

Transforming Chronic Care with AI

The Jarvis DHL project aims to transform chronic care for DHL patients using AI tools and models validated with locally relevant data. By addressing both lifestyle factors and medication adherence, this comprehensive approach seeks to improve diabetes control and overall health outcomes. As this innovative AI solution continues to develop, it holds the promise of significantly reducing the progression of DHL and its complications, potentially decreasing healthcare costs and improving the quality of life for millions of patients worldwide.
